Dive into Leafy Hydroponics at GreenTech Americas 2025: A Unique Workshop Experience in Querétaro, Mexico

Published on 30/01/2025

The leafy greens industry in North America has been growing rapidly in the last years. This growth is driven by increasing consumer demand for high-quality, pesticide-free, and year-round fresh produce. As the sector expands, ensuring that every step—from variety selection to automation and packaging—is done correctly is crucial for long-term success. Recently, Central and South America has been experiencing a shift, with supermarkets and consumers seeking cleaner, soil-free products as well as stable year-round supply. Traditional outdoor farming in these regions faces more often challenges such as drought stress, unpredictable weather, and soil-related diseases. All these confirm that hydroponic cultivation is an attractive solution for growers looking to ensure both stability and sustainability in their production. As the industry across the Americas embraces controlled environment agriculture, hydroponics is emerging as a key method to meet evolving market demands.

Cultivators, in collaboration with GreenTech Americas, partnered up with BASF|Nunhems, Green Automation, and JASA Packaging Solutions. We are excited to announce an exclusive workshop on hydroponic leafy greens in Mexico. It will take place at the Querétaro Centro de Congresos during GreenTech Americas on Tuesday, March 25th, 2025.

This workshop marks a key moment in Cultivators’ mission to bring the expertise of hydroponic leafy greens cultivation to North, Central, and South America. Following the success of the initial 2-day Leafy Hydroponics Summit (LHS) that was held in the Netherlands in 2024. After seeing the positive responses and interest this event generated all over the world, Cultivators has decided to make LHS an annual affair in the Netherlands (this year on June 16-17th). The workshop in Mexico represents the first step in expanding the conversation about leafy hydroponics more locally for the Americas as well.

This workshop “Everything you Have to Know About Cultivating Hydroponics Leafy Greens” will take place from 8:30 AM to 10:55 AM (local time), offering a unique chance to engage with experts in the field, while also networking with professionals from the horticultural industry. Attendees will enjoy a welcoming atmosphere with drinks and snacks, making it the perfect environment for both learning and connecting. As well as a great start to the 3-day GreenTech Americas experience. With limited spots available, this intimate setting ensures that every participant will have the opportunity to engage in discussions and ask questions during the insightful presentations.

Workshop Agenda, Querétaro Mexico, March 25th, 2025

What to Expect?

At the heart of the workshop is a deep dive into hydroponic leafy greens cultivation. Sonny Moerenhout, one of the Managing Partners of Cultivators, a greenhouse expert, will kick things off by providing a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of hydroponic leafy cultivation. His years of experience, particularly in licensed cannabis and hydroponic lettuce, provide him with a wealth of practical knowledge that attendees will not want to miss.

From there, Carlos H. Umana, Technical Sales Manager at BASF, will guide participants through the key considerations for varieties’ selection and risk mitigation in greenhouse planning and design in regards to the local conditions. Drawing on nearly two decades of experience in vegetable seeds and a specific focus on leafy crops in controlled environments, Carlos will offer invaluable insights for anyone looking to improve their hydroponic operations.

Patrik Borenius, CEO of Green Automation, will then take the stage to discuss the importance of cutting-edge automation systems in maximizing yields for hydroponic leafy greens. With expertise in managing international projects and experience with the highest-yielding hydroponic lettuce systems, Patrik will shed light on how automation can transform the efficiency and productivity of hydroponic operations.

Finally, Joost Somford from JASA Packaging Solutions will explore the intersection of sustainability and packaging in the hydroponic industry. With a decade of experience in greenhouse technologies and packaging, Joost will discuss the evolving landscape of packaging, post-harvest automation, and resource optimization, helping participants understand how innovations in packaging can drive both sustainability and market competitiveness.

Key Notes

Just like the LHS, this workshop is not about sales pitches—it is about gaining practical, real-world knowledge from leading industry experts.
